Swainsboro Presbyterian Apartments

The Swainsboro Presbyterian Apartments were opened in 1984, when the Savannah Presbytery saw the need for older adults in the region to have a quality place to live. After a lot of hard work, the Apartments were opened, and continue today to be a vital part of the outreach ministry to older adults. Through a collaboration with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), SPA can provide subsidized rent.  The facility is reviewed each year by HUD to insure that they are meeting standards.  Not only do they meet standards, but they regularly exceed them.

Facts about the SPA:

  • Residents must be 62 years or older. The average age is 77. There are 8 men and 46 women.
  • There is an annual income limit in order to qualify, which is $14,750 for individuals, and $16,900 for couples. On an average, the residents have an income of about $9,000 a year. The average each one spends for medical care out of his or her own pocket is $1,860!
  • The rent is based on the individual’s circumstances, and is adjusted yearly to meet their needs. SPA pays for the electricity, gas, water, sewer, and yard maintenance; residents pay for cable and phones
  • They have a total of 50 apartments; each one has an electric range, refrigerator, central A/C, carpeting, cable access, smoke detector, and emergency alarm. They have a community center where they offer social and recreational programs; there is also a dining room, beauty shop, and laundry facilities

Be An Angel!

The average resident of SPA has an income of less than $10,000 per year, and their medical expenses can exceed 20% of that!  After they pay living expenses, there's not much left over for personal items.  That's why Christmas is such an important time of year for the staff and residents of the Apartments.

Each year, the SPA holds the Be An Angel Gift Drive, which collects necessary and fun items to give as gifts to its residents.  SPA does not market this program outside the Savannah Presbytery, so usually our 40 churches and 2 new church developments are the only resource for these gifts.
