More blessed to receive than give  - Recognizing, accepting gifts of all is key to partnership, panelists say  by Jerry L. Van Marter, Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE — A seminal Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) world mission document is entitled “Presbyterians Do Mission in Partnership.” But all too often, Presbyterians engaged in overseas mission fail to take into account that our mission partners have much to offer, a panel of mission experts told participants last week toward the end of “World Mission ’07: A Celebration of Grace.”

Savannah Presbytery:  Forty-Two Churches United in the Love of God

On the front cover of every newsletter, one can find the mission statement of the Savannah Presbytery; the very first line is “United in the love of God…”  We are 41 churches and one new church development united together in a common bond and linked to one another by our presbytery.  In order to strengthen that bond, we invite every congregation to pray for one of the other congregations in the presbytery.  Following an alphabetical listing of the churches, every week we will lift up a congregation, their pastor, clerk, and session in prayer.  We urge you to make this a weekly part of your bible studies, Sunday schools, prayer meetings, and/or individual prayers.  Let’s unite in prayer for each other!

Sunday, October 21st:  Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church – In 1960, some Savannah islands residents, who were members of First PC in Savannah, approached their session about starting a new Presbyterian church.  After doing some research, First PC began the work on creating a congregation in the Wilmington area.  After land was purchased by the Savannah Presbytery, the church building was built, and a manse secured.  The church was officially established in 1963, and they called their first pastor, Rev. William B. Johnson.  For over thirty years, the church has run a preschool, accredited by the state, which serves many local residents of the Wilmington Island area.  They have been served since 2006 by Rev Andy Meeker.  Their session consists of twelve members, and their clerk is Bob Hastie.

Sunday, November 4th:  Missionary and At Large Minister Members of the Savannah Presbytery – Unknown to many people in the Savannah Presbytery, are the minister members who are not currently serving churches.  They spend their time in other fields of work, some of which are validated by the presbytery, and some in missionary positions.  The Savannah Presbytery currently has two minister members serving as missionaries in other countries: George Brink is currently serving in Rustdal Blackheath, South Africa, and Harry Horne is serving at the Latin American Biblical University in Lima, Peru.  Our “At Large” minister members are: Steve Aguzzi (Ph.D. candidate, Duquesne University), David Bae, Alan Baroody (Director, Fraser Center), Marla Bauler, Nelle Bordeaux, Fairy Caroland (New Hope House), Patricia Cockrell Wood, Vanessa Hawkins (Office of Black Congregational Enhancement, Presbyterian Church, USA), Michael Kizzia, Katy Rigler (student, Vanderbilt Theological School), Deanie Strength, and Claire Williams.

LOUISVILLE — General Assembly Moderator Joan Gray says “my gut tells me two things — the level of anger and confusion and mistrust that I think we all experienced after last year’s General Assembly has moderated greatly …. and I sense new energy coming up ‘from the bottom’ of the church, and I see it in a number of ways.”

Missionaries in ‘Mission Challenge ’07’ commissioned - Mission workers will visit 144 presbyteries during October

General Assembly Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick commissions 48 Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) missionaries on Oct. 3 who will be itinerating throughout the church during the month of October as part of “Mission Challenge ’07.” More than 140 PC(USA) presbyteries have offered to host missionaries for a week, during which time the mission workers will tell their stories and solicit spiritual and financial support for the PC(USA)’s World Mission enterprise. The commissioning service was part of “World Mission ’07: A Celebration of Grace,” a global mission conference Oct. 2-5 that has drawn more than 600 mission-minded Presbyterians to Louisville for four days of worship, Bible study, plenary and panel presentations on various aspects of Presbyterian World Mission, and a host of practical workshops for congregations, presbyteries and mission networks.

Sunday, October 14th:  White Bluff Presbyterian Church – White Bluff holds a distinct recognition in Savannah Presbytery as being the second oldest church!  This church is 264 years old!  The church was started in 1743 by German settlers, who petitioned the English government for a pastor and land to build their church on.  They got both, and in fact, the current church building stands on that very plot of land received over 250 years ago!  It was deeded to White Bluff church in 1759 by King George II, and although the majority of the original landmarks are gone, there is still a cemetery behind it bearing headstones that can be dated back to the 1800s.  The 236 member congregation has been served by Rev. Peacemaking Offering - October 7

 The 2007 Peacemaking Offering Brochure

“And the leaves of the tree . . .”
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.  (Revelation 22:1–5)

Sunday, October 7th:  Washington Street Presbyterian Church – This church began in 1953 after two Dublin residents, Lucius T. Bacote and Luther Coleman, approached the pastor of Henry Memorial PC about starting a Presbyterian church for the black and African American citizens of their city.  Henry’s pastor at the time, Rev. Glenn Doris, led the first worship service on October 11th of that year, and fifty-three years later this 45 member congregation is flourishing.  This year they called a new pastor, Rev. Ricky Porter.  Their twelve member session includes their clerk, Verline Copenny.  The church was struck by tragedy last year, when the congregation saw their church buildings, save their sanctuary, go up in flames as a result of an electrical fire.  A little more than a year later, the church has been rebuilt, and its members are exciting about the next chapter in the church’s life.
