Role of Companions in Ministry - Mission and Responsibilities

The term “Companion” comes from the Old French and Latin com panis, “bread with.”  As Jesus shared bread with his disciples, the companion eats “the bread of life” with parish pastors, commissioned lay pastors, certified Christian educators, sessions, and congregations.

Each Committee on Ministry member shall become a companion in ministry and shall establish a three-part relationship with each session and congregation of presbytery through a one-on-one involvement:

·        through a visit, at least annually, with each parish pastor and/or commissioned lay pastor serving a church in the presbytery, to include the spouse whenever possible.

·        through a visit, at least annually, with each session.

·        through a visit, at least annually, with each congregation (worship, fellowship, etc.).

The companion shall respond to and guide sessions, congregations, and pastors as special needs arise.

The companion shall:

·        attend Committee on Ministry meetings, ordinarily on the first Tuesday of each month;

·        respond and guide congregations in transition

·        participate in examinations as needed

·        coordinate renewal of contracts for Designated Pastors, Associate Designated Pastors, Interim Pastors and Interim Associate Pastors, Stated Supply Pastors, Temporary Supply Pastors, Commissioned Lay Pastors, Inquirers and Candidates serving as Temporary Supply Pastors, and Parish Associates
