The Tree of Life: Wisdom in Ancient Israel and the Book of Proverbs
Brief Description—The wisdom literature of ancient Israel (Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes) invites us into an age-old and enduring conversation about what is good and wise in life. How do we discern right from wrong in a world of complex and competing claims? What values do we treasure and why? What makes for strong families and just communities? What cultivates empathy and motivates acts of kindness? How do we understand money, the power of speech, the realities of suffering, and the inevitability of death? And how do we teach it all to our children? Through the particular lens of the book of Proverbs, this study explores how the ancient Israelite sages wrestled with such questions, the formation of moral character, and what it means to “fear the Lord.”
